The Absent Willow Review publishes fictional short stories or poetry that fall within the Horror, Fantasy, and Science Fiction genres.

Stories should fall between 2,000 – 8,000 words in length.  Stories above 8,000 words may be considered if deemed exceptional by our editorial staff and must not exceed 10,000 words.

Please follow the submission guidelines outlined below. Submissions that do not follow the guidelines will be automatically rejected.

General Submission Guidelines

The Absent Willow Review will not publish stories or poetry that may be seen as promoting discrimination against other persons based on gender, age, sexual orientation, religion or race. Violence and profanity are not prohibited but should be used with discretion.

  1. Submissions must be submitted via our submission form.
  2. Stories and poems must be attached as MS Word documents, Apple Pages documents or RTF attachments, written in Courier, Arial, or Times with 12 pt text, double-spaced. Use a standard tab at the beginning of new paragraphs. For section breaks use *** centered on its own line – not sharps or other symbols.
  3. Submissions should be accompanied by a bio of the writer that will appear in the magazine if their submission is published. The bio should not exceed 100 words in length.
  4. Submissions must not have been previously published in print or in an e-zine.
  5. Use a working email address. If replies to your submission cannot be delivered after three attempts, your submission will be removed from consideration and no further attempt to contact you will be made.
  6. Writers should not expect to receive editing notes on any stories accepted.
  7. Simultaneous submission are allowed granted that The Absent Willow Review is notified immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

Before submitting your story please review our Terms and Conditions.  If you would like us to include a brief bio please include that as well in the section provided below.  Bios of contributing authors will appear on the Authors page and may appear in our monthly newsletter (which all submitters are eligible to receive).

Our editorial staff will respond within 2-4 weeks.

Editor’s Choice Award for Published Stories:

On a bi-monthly basis one author will be chosen by the editors to receive a cash prize of $50.  All works published during the contest period are eligible.  Winners will be given the choice of receiving the $50 contest proceeds via check or PayPal.
